Being a mom of a child with special needs, or a child that struggles, is hard. Now, I’m not discounting dads, but today the focus is on moms.
Sometimes, there are good days.
Sometimes, there are bad days.
Sometimes there are great days.
And sometimes, there are really, really, bad days.
On those days, those bad days- sometimes- it’s ok if the only thing you do is breathe.
As many of you already know, my youngest son has special needs. So I live it.
I live it, I breathe it and I feel it.
And you know what? At Brain Fit- we have so many others who also live, breathe and feel it.
Some days- on those really, really, bad days- sometimes all you can do is breathe. Sometimes all you can do is take a pause and breathe. Take that pause, breathe, and know…that all will be OK!
There’s another saying that I like, and it goes like this: “She’s strong, but she’s exhausted.” Have you ever had anyone tell you how “strong” you must be? How they want to be like you because you have it “all together”? But secretly- inside- you are exhausted. Yes, you’re strong- but you’re exhausted.
I’ve often heard that having a child with special needs is like running a marathon. And, I suppose that’s a good analogy. You start off gung-ho and full of energy. But, as time wears on, your energy drains and you just want to see the finish line. And eventually, you get to the point where you’re not even sure if you can continue on- at least not at that same speed. You’re strong, but you’re exhausted.
On those days? I give you permission.
I give you permission to just breathe.
The laundry can wait. The dog can wait. Your house doesn’t need to be cleaned- not that day.
Those are the days when you no longer feel strong. You no longer can imagine the finish line. You can no longer stand (physically or metaphorically) because you are so exhausted.
On those days mama? Just breathe.
